iOS 17: Which iPhones will get the update?

iOS 17

A new iOS update will likely be rereleased in September 2023. Especially users of older devices are wondering whether their old iPhone will still get the update to iOS 17. Which devices will be compatible with the new iOS update?

Apple generally does not publish any advance information about iPhones that fall out of an update cycle. However, some many analysts and leakers have already reliably predicted which iOS devices will no longer be updated in previous years. There are also first predictions for iOS 17.

iOS 17: These iPhones are probably no longer compatible

Most recently, the iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus, iPhone SE (2016), iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus have reached the end of their update cycle. With iOS 17, some iPhones are also expected to go empty-handed. These devices are likely to be affected:

  • iPhone 8
  • iPhone 8 Plus
  • iPhone X

So, iPhones released in 2017 will have received their last major update with iOS 16 in the fall of 2022. Besides that, these iPads are also said to be affected:

  • iPad Pro (1st generation, 9.7 & 12 inches)
  • iPad 5

When it comes to the information, one should currently keep in mind that these are only rumors. The information goes back to an anonymous Twitter user who limited the visibility of his tweet.

These iPhones are supposed to get iOS 17

So, going by the list of devices that are no longer expected to receive iOS 17, the following Apple smartphones remain for the next round of updates:

  • iPhone 14 (Plus, Pro, Pro Max)
  • iPhone SE (2022)
  • iPhone 13 (mini, Pro, Pro Max)
  • iPhone 12 (mini, Pro, Pro Max)
  • iPhone SE (2020)
  • iPhone 11 (Pro, Pro Max)
  • iPhone XR
  • iPhone XS (Max)

At the same time as the iOS 17 update, the new iPhone generation will presumably also be rereleased with the iPhone 15, which will run the current version out of the box.

According to MacRumors, an update to iOS 17 is no longer possible for these devices for technical reasons. Devices that are not supposed to get a major feature update will continue to be provided with security updates that close any gaps that occur. iPhones that stopped running iOS 15 are currently also still receiving the corresponding patches.

Even though the iPhone is included in the list of devices compatible with iOS 17, you might have to do without some new features. Even with iOS 16, older iPhones could not access the live text functions due to a weaker processor.
